Surrey Hills excursion, sometime next year....?
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:44:43 PM »
I've discussed with a few over the previous months about doing a trip to the Surrey Hills for a bit of MTBing. I rode there for around 5 years so I know the trails - crucially, the best ones - pretty well. I thought we might be able to schedule something for next spring/summer.
Staying at the YHA in Holmbury St. Mary would be a good bet, and cheap; and it's right near the top one of the main hills, central to the best riding.
There is quite a bit of varied riding and a surpisingly large area to explore, if the desire is there.

Here are some vids showing the kinds of riding available and I know how to get to each trail in these edits too. We can also meet up with some guys I used to ride with regularly who will also then know the new stuff that will inevitably have popped up & for the other good stuff I still haven't ridden.

Sounds good to me - I've fancied a trip down there for a while.

I've been promising to visit my brother down there for a while so I should probably say yes! He'd probably join us too.

By the way, Justin, if you drop the s off the https: on your You Tube links, the forum automatically embeds the vids.  8)

Haha - haven't seen that vid for years!

Even with the risks involved of being a surrey hills mountain biker, I'm game for a trip definitely.

Cool. Thanks for the tip.  ;D

By the way, I know the guy who made that video. He rides with Nirvana Cycles in Westcott.

Looks like we have some people keen on a trip. I'll look to setting a date soon. Once the Xmas nonsense is out of the way.

Bah, humbug, and all that.  8)

I've got some friends who live in the Surrey Hills and I've just spent the weekend biking there, awesome fun :). Once you fix a date I'm tempted to come across and join you for a long weekend.

Yeah, there is some very good riding there. Will post up a date soon.
And Merry Christmas to you all too.

I'm thinking of either April/May, or August, using the bank holiday weekend. What does everyone think?

Thinking about the Surrey Hills trip I'd suggest the April/May Bank Holiday weekend. More time for riding if we take in the Monday too.
The YHA in Holmbury St. Mary is a good place to stay, relatively cheap - 13 for camping per night, 23 per person per night in a shared room, or 79 per night based on four people sharing a prebooked room. This being the Banker's Belt of Surrey finding anything cheaper will be hard work.
The YHA is also central on Holmbury Hill, smack in the middle of the best riding area, comprising the hill itself, Pitch Hill/Winterfold to the West and Leith Hill/Redlands to the East, and Ranmore Common to the North.
I've stayed at the YHA before. It's clean, comfortable, and is in a stunning location. There is a good pub and restaurant not too far away, The Volunteer. I have had many a pint and meal there. Great food and drink, but not cheap.

Here's a Google Maps link showing the location of the hostel:

At the moment there are rooms and camping spots available, but if we want to get this place to stay we better get on it pronto.

So please let me know who is interested and if you are okay with the proposed date and accommodation.
