BMC 79 Mile Challenge
« on: October 12, 2012, 06:18:44 PM »
Think I will be having a crack at this. Starting out of Crickhowell and up onto and around Mynydd Eppynt to Builth then back.  8) Not sure what the pace will be like, but I'm in there so doubt we'll be that quick and if there are enough of us maybe a break away will form  ;)

What dates Andy?
Has to be as per the challenge (I want a badge! ;) ) so 16th to 18th Nov. I should think the weekend will make more sense so 17th or 18th TBA.

I really don't like that route - far too much mileage on main roads. And aside from being narrow, busy and full of 60mph traffic, the A40 and A470 suffer from being rather boring roads as well.

Who selected that route, Andy? (Please don't say yourself!  :-[ )

It was picked out from a quick short list of 2 with the other one being a lot hillier than that. It has to be 79+ miles and I didn't want to overdo it on both counts. Have you looked at it closely enough? there's only about 3 miles on the A40 and A470. Admittedly, there's a fair stretch on the A479 from Bronllys back to Crickhowell. I won't claim to be an expert at choosing road ride routes just yet!  ::) You want to suggest something different? Criteria - not too much climbing 79+ miles (but make sure the "+" isn't too + )

Ah, does it take the roads parallel to the main ones? If so, ignore me!

And if you are looking for a route that's not too hilly, you're looking in the wrong place! 79 miles on those roads in that area AND YOU WILL DIE!  ;D

(Obviously, bearing in mind specificity in training, and cyclocross being flat and grassy, not hilly and tarmacky and all that, then I'm washing my hair on the day that you are doing it.)

Off the top of my head, I think that I'd go for a route something like Pembrey, Carmarthen, Llandeilo, Ammanford, Llanelli and then home via wherever necessary to add on the last few mile. If that's not long enough I'd extend the Towy valley bit up to Llandovery and work it back from there with the option of heading over the hills.

So you're a road bike pussy as well as an MTB pussy!  :P Ha! ;)

I'll check out the terrain on that suggestion of yours and compare it. Graham has done the Eppynt route and describes it as "mellow". So I'm hopeful, I think he appreciates my position  :-\

Just to revive this - http://app.strava.com/challenges/bmc-79-mile-challenge It's still on the cards  8) Simply, a 79 mile road ride one day between 16th and 18th (next weekend) Day to be decided. It'll run out of Crickhowell and over Epynt. If anyone wants to join us, just yell.

Any map of the route? I reckon I could manage a 79miler dependant on how much gradient is in it. What sort of set off time will this be too?

Scroll up about 8 posts - there's one there. It's just over 1000m of climbing. But looking at the route I reckon that's a touch optimistic. I think it would be closer to 1250m, I guess we'll see.  ;D
