Title: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Pilau on October 01, 2017, 08:51:19 PM
As if we didn't need reminding that winter's coming. The Warmup entries are open. Do I remember it sold out fairly quickly last year? Who's interested?

Would we make it a weekend? Nant? CYB? Pont Scethin (I still haven't done that one)?

Hmm, I'd forgotten it was this short. Maybe not a sensible one. Despite its length though, MBR list it as a Killer Loop.  ???

No luck on the accom at the usual place.  Probably just head up Sunday morning.  Toying with the idea of getting a B&B but they're more money than the Hostel and cant vary the numbers as easily.

Jon, Rob was going to come up with me.

Tristan - did you guys come to a final decision on staying up there? I'm kind of in two minds. I'm not going to be fit so 2 days riding straight off the back of a really slack time and a chest infection is going to kick my pulp up the road!

So Jon, if it looks like I'm just Sunday, you can passenger with me.

Still haven't done anything with accom so be heading up Sunday morning.  It gives me an excuse to do my flat tyre in the daylight Sat too and it looks like Curtis is going to need the time to sort his bike anyways.

I'll either go up in my van or my bros car or see if we can both hitch a lift with Dom.
I would offer Jon a lift  but then I remembered it's Jon so I wont!  If for whatever reason Andy you can't fit Jon in afterall I guess Dom and Jon could share and i'll go up with my brother.
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Dom on January 17, 2018, 04:44:56 PM
I'll be driving up in my van unless things work out so that someone decides to give me a lift. Thought I was doing a running event on Saturday but it turns out I'm probably not, so I would have gone up that way on the Sat if anyone else had been. But looking like all going up Sunday a.m. now, which is fine with me.

Happy to drive and give lifts, can accommodate Jon and Andy (or Tris and Curtis) if necessary.

Oh and great that you're coming along Jon!

Andy, shall we jump in with Dom?
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup

Yeah, I don't mind how we work it. If it makes any particular sense to do it a particular way, do that.  Whichever way we do it, Curtis will be coming through Swansea, right?
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 18, 2018, 09:59:52 AM
That was the plan to share fuel but I'll check with him actually.  Looking at google he can go direct from his there and save about an hour each way.
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 18, 2018, 10:35:12 AM
Ok, my brother's going to go from his if possible.  So if there's a lift going then I'll grab it.  Or if I get my van rolling I can give a lift.  So can we aim for 2 in each vehicle from Swansea?
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Pilau on January 18, 2018, 02:34:14 PM
Sure fing. I can drive. I'm  guessing Tristan's van is the most economical and Dom's is about the same as mine (calculated in gallons per mile  ;) ). So Tristan, if  you're in rolling state, makes sense for me to take Dom and you go with Jon?
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Dom on January 18, 2018, 03:05:32 PM
Sounds fine to me Andy, offer of a lift is much appreciated and there's no doubt your vehicle will fare better than mine if we encounter snow like last year. And it can't be less economical than mine...

Are you OK for fitting 2x bikes in/or your car? Can always take wheels off and separate with foam, old blankets etc.

I'll be in touch before Sunday to make arrangements
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 18, 2018, 03:52:06 PM
Wait, did we pick straws?  I musta drawn the short one!  But yea, I guess I can give Jon a lift.

Will be doing my spare tyre sat morn and aim to pick another up lunchtime.  So should know then if i'm good.  I'm a little concerned that the jury rigged tyre removal device might be 1 directional only so I might not be able to get the wheel cage re-attached.  Will know by midday Saturday and will get in touch if my van's out.

Also not sure my van would be more economical than your car Andy?  But yea, almost certainly more so than Doms petrol burner!

Should work both ways Tristan . The two bolts should be counter tightened against each other and as long as your not heaving loads of torque, they should lock onto the bolt shaft.
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 18, 2018, 04:12:34 PM
Yea, i was thinking that if the bolt head isn't deep enough then on clockwise rotation it might only be putting pressure on the lower bolt which will then unscrew from the thread without the top bolt providing resistance.  Will find out Sat!
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Pilau on January 18, 2018, 04:17:44 PM
If aanyone wants to do a serious comparison mine does about 32 mpg  ;D I'm currently sitting in the Honda showroom, just been looking at more modern versions of mine with mpg's claimed of >50!! :o

Yea, i was thinking that if the bolt head isn't deep enough then on clockwise rotation it might only be putting pressure on the lower bolt which will then unscrew from the thread without the top bolt providing resistance.  Will find out Sat!

If you have a friendly local garage, you could ask him to drop a couple of snobs of weld on the bolts to prrmanently lock em down
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup

That's why I thought yours would be pretty high.  It's a lot newer than my van i think.  Was doing some content in work for Mitsubishi a while ago and their pickups are claiming some pretty impressive MPG so figured a crossover jeep like yours would be higher again.

Don't worry about it Jon, just note the solution is to take a welder to it. Do you want me to fix your Intense?
Talking of that bike, bring that tonight if the Boardman's out of action!  :P ;D

Dom, I usually put them in side by side and upside down with the wheels off bunny them in and separate them with wheels bags etc. Works reasonably well.

So todays maintenance has not gone particularly well.  Ford seeemed to have designed the worst possible spare wheel release system...

Thanks to Andys clever bodge i've managed to get the spare wheel onto the ground.  Unfortunately it's a 2 part release system and the next part involves what should be unscrewing a hand tightened head but because of where we live it is completely rusted.  As it's not a bolt head I can't get any decent force to turn it and my trusty vice for such a thing has split.

So, long and short of it, doesn't look like i'll be driving tomorrow.  Just going to head down screwfix now to see if they've got any molegrips to help.  Will update if that gets me anywhere.

Also, anyone want to lend my brother a bike?  His looks to be broken and he's failed to organise a spare.

Post by: Jon on January 20, 2018, 03:12:04 PM
He could borrow the Boardman but there are several problems:

Its filthy and i won't have time to clean it
The brake pads are worn to the backing plate and I have no replacements.
It's a Large - not sure how tall C is?
It's a Boardman and he rides SC.  ;D

So he can ride it if he's happy with a filthy cheap bike with no brakes.
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 20, 2018, 03:31:53 PM
Cheers Jon.  What brakes are they?
The rest of it i'm sure can be dealt with and I don't understand the cleaning thing anyway.

I've found out that vise grips are the best thing ever.  Managed to get the hand screw nut off so have changed the tyre now.  Going to check it later to make sure it's holding air (should be fine as it still had 20 ish psi in it from at least 3 years ago) but looking like I should be able to drive tomorrow after all.

Stresssssssssss! >:(  :o Sounds like a right ball ache! Get some waterproof marine grade grease Tristan and coat that bolt thing up with it. Might just slow down the rot .

I have the Scott, but it's an out and out XC bike and will try to kill Curtis or any rider at the merest hint of an opportunity. It's a Scott Aspect, Aspect being Taiwanese for Cu#t! He'd be quick up hill on it though! ;D

Dom, if plan A remains in play, 2:45 hrs journey so mosey on down here for 7:45 ish, wake me up, make me some breakfast ...  ;D :D :D ;D Unless you need me to come to you? We'll probably need to lower your seat and whip your wheels off and the bikes should go in without any significant contact. Bring a change of clothes, I anticipate we'll be getting wet!!  ::)  ;)
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 20, 2018, 04:39:54 PM
Cheers all.

Jon - let me know if it's both sets of pads or just one.  Probably aim for the full suss over Andys death machine.  Although no great loss if Andy's XC bike rides Curtis off the hill.

Andy - impressive translations but I think you might want to leave a little earlier than that?  Sign on is only supposed to be between 8ish and 10:30 I think.  So at best you'd be getting there as sign on is closing (not that I think it actually does).  In reality Pigs altered time means one of you won't meet the other until 15mins after agreed time and additional faffing with the bikes will add at least another 15mins!

Great fun yesterday, thanks everyone. Very cold, VERY wet but some nice trails and good atmosphere.

I was having a quick look for pics as a diversionary activity to avoid starting work on a Monday morning, couldn't find any but found this pic of Curtis (I think!) from a couple of years ago, used in an 'event report' for Enduro Magazine. Looking very 'enduro' there Curtis!

Fair to say it was. Not necessarily lower temperatures (although temp was low), but being wet through from very early on made sure we were all pretty cold
Title: Re: Dyfi Winter Warmup
Post by: Tristan on January 22, 2018, 11:13:21 AM
Definitely colder if the water got to you!  I think I had 5 layers on my core which did a really good job of keeping me a nice temperature though.  If I could have worked out how to stop my hands from freezing then I daresay I could have managed the elusive final lap!

As it was, by the end, holding on and using the brakes was mostly guesswork as fingers froze all feeling out of them.  Which was really helpful on the new final descents back to the startpoint.  Even more so when people decided to stand in the middle of a steep bit and block all the lines.

Dom, I hate to be the one to point it out but that fellow was blatantly looking for somewhere to pull over so he could put his glasses on.  Which for some reason he's left hanging on his jacket.  There's a country mile on the inside that you could have squeezed through!

Andy, you mean those other pictures were you're posing for the camera?  I think possibly you should work on that!

The cold was limiting what my face muscles could do.  :( (Dunno what I'm going to do for excuses the rest of the time!)

There's a country mile on the inside that you could have squeezed through
Allow me to finish off that sentence for you.....

Was my hat on at a beginner's angle for the whole ride? My head was frozen solid so I wasn't getting normal feedback....

(I'm assuming, judging by the clump of slush and debris on the side, that it was after I had forward rolled through the gorse bush. But it may never have been straight.  :-[ )

Jon, I hadn't noticed which way your hat was pointing but, truth be told, I try avoid looking at you where possible!

Dom, the photographer knew the risks.  Any ensuing collision would have been their fault!

Ahhh, one man's 'country mile' is another man's 'certain-death-to-all-if-attempted non-existent gap'... I think I'm just too polite!

You know what's really polite?  Saying "Sorry"!
Doesn't matter if you're saying it because you've just run over their million dollar camera, it still counts.
